"Ellis and Fanny Comstock came to Canada in 1904 to the Haibrite area. Ellis
was born in Minnesota in 1832, and was in the war between the North and
South. His regiment was Company B. Second Minnesota Infantry. He was wounded
and sent home. Later they came to Canada. They had five children, three boys
and two girls who were grown up and married by the time they came: James
(better known as Jim), Luke, Vincent, Bertha and Sarah.

Like all early settlers, they worked hard. Fanny made her own soap, candles
and home-made yeast for bread. They had a cattle ranch on the Souris River,
six and one-half miles southwest of Halbrite [SE quarter Section 20,
Township 5, Range 12, West 2nd Meridian]. Both are laid to rest in the
Halbrite cemetery, Fanny in 1923 and Ellis in 1926.

Vincent was a jeweller and also did printing.

Jim married Amanda Francelia Taplin better known as Celia in 1889 and came
to Canada from Minnesota in the spring of 1903 to the Halbrite
[Saskatchewan] area. They had four school age children [Grace, Olive, Lloyd
and Goldie] when they arrived.  The three younger ones attended school in
Halbrite.

They built the house now [1984] owned by Forsbergs and farmed for two years.
They then moved to Halbrite when Jim had a Land Title Office and saw many
homesteaders to their chosen quarters of land.  They also operated the hotel
business for a time. Jim was a handy man so he was kept busy helping build
barns and even cooked for road camps. He, along with Charlie Smith, drilled
water wells. Later he took over the blacksmith shop that Elmer Van Tyle
owned. They remained there on the corner of Coteau Avenue across from the
United Church until his death in July, 1940. Celia was a good midwife and
was well known in the community for her nursing services. She was often
called on by Dr. Mainprize to give a helping hand. She was thrifty and loved
to hook rugs, make quilts and sew for others as well as knit lace, socks and
mitts. She always kept beautiful house plants as well as a garden full of
flowers and vegetables. They celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary
in July, 1939. Jim liked to play his violin, mouth organ and accordian.

They will be remembered for their hospitality. Both are laid to rest in
Halbrite Cemetery, Jim in July, 1940 and Celia in 1948.

Grace married Bill Buss (see Buss).

Olive married Llmer Van Tyle. (story else where.).

Lloyd died from pneumonia at nineteen years of age during the first world
war.

Goldie married Clyde Wilson in 1916. They had two children, a girl and a
boy, Inez and Ivan. Ivan passed away before his first birthday and is laid
to rest in Halbrite Cemetery. They [Goldie and Clyde] took out a homestead
in the Ogema [Saskatchewan] area where Clyde worked building roads.  In
1924, they moved to Cottage Grove, Oregon. They returned to Halbrite in 1929
and worked with Jim Comstock drilling wells. Then he worked in Laqua's store
for a time. He tried farming in the thirties; later they moved to Taylorton
to work in the Western Dominion mines. From there he joined the Air Force as
a sergeant and was stationed at Mossbank. They finally ended up in Hamilton,
Ontario where they retired. Goldie passed away in March, 1960, Clyde in
February, 1965 and Inez in June, 1978."

"HORSMAN, IRA and FRANCES


"(Taken from Ira Horsman's memoirs written in the sixties by his own hand)

"My father, Samuel Horsman, homesteaded in Roberts County at Wilmount
[should be Wilmot], South Dakota, U.S.A. in 1880. I was born there on June
11, 1882. Before coming to Canada we lived at Blackmer, North Dakota.

Jim Comstock, a neighbor, had made a deal for some land two miles east of
Halbrite, Sask. and when he came back told of the good deal to purchase a
place for only ten dollars, so I decided to come along. I was a young lad in
my early twenties.

Ellis Comstock, Jack Pettis, Jim and I loaded our machinery, horses, feed,
etc. into a box car and headed for Halbrite. We arrived twelve days later on
May 3, 1903. Halbrite wasn't much of a town yet. There was a little spur
track you could back four cars on. We made a chute to unload our stock. The
C. P.R. [Railroad] station was a box car.  The agent's name was Mr. Moore.
There was a section house. Mr Hanson was section boss. They had a pump
station there and water tank. Walter Ackny was the man who ran it.

I had five horses, two colts, some small machinery and only two dollars and
fifty cents in my pocket. I didn't farm the first year but worked for Mr.
Comstock hauling rocks into town for basements, dug some cellars, and helped
put in the first through siding for the C.P.R. [Railroad].

The first celebration was held July 1, 1903 in Halbrite. It was a big event
with the band from Bowbells, N. Dakota, and this became an annual event.
[July 1 is Dominion Day in Canada, much like our 4th of July.]

After filing for my homestead on SE 22-5-12 in the spring of 1904, I started
farming. The grass was so tall you couldn't see a rock until a prairie fire
went through and then you got the shock of your life.

In 1906 I bought a threshing outfit of my own. In 1910 I decided batching
wasn't for me, so in November Frances Comstock and I were married. In the
years to come we had three boys and a girl. Lorence was born Jan. 27, 1915.
The second boy, Iven Murrel was born Sept. 5, 1916. He passed away and was
buried on his first birthday. Our girl, Sylvia Wannita, was born Jan. 29,
1918. Later Ivan Lester was born Sept.19, 1925.

We lived on a couple of different quarters south of Halbrite before finally
buying Fred Pepperlin's farm along the Souris River. [Quarters here are
quarter sections of land, 160 acres.] There we lived until retiring to the
Village of Halbrite. We had experienced a couple of cyclones, so my wife
felt safer at the bottom of the hill. There I farmed, ranched, broke and
traded horses. I eventually added the adjoining Buffin land to my own, along
with the Nick Wilgenbusch homestead.

In the fall we went all over threshing with my outfit. My wife cooked for
the crew in a cook car which went along. We could tell many a story about
that.

Many times I drove Doc Mainprize across the hills to Goodwater during winter
storms. At that time the road to Goodwater ran through our yard crossing the
river a few yards away.

We experienced several floods in the spring from the Souris and Rough Bark
Rivers.

We enjoyed dancing so the family took in all the many house parties and
school dances where we played whist and danced. I called many square dances
and auctioned for many pie and basket socials.

Our trips to Estevan coal mine were long and cold.

There was a man named Livingston who lived along the river and built a roof
over part of a coulee and kept horses for trading. He came before 1900 and
had to do his shopping in Moose Jaw.

There was also a blind man named Cameron and his blind wife who lived along
the river. They had a child who wasn't blind. One dark night the blind man
and my father-in-law, Cal Comstock, were walking together across the yard
and Cal fell over the wagon tongue and the blind man walked around it. The
blind man walked along with his cane to Halbrite to shop.

The boys worked the gravel pits which were on my land, with horses and I
sold hills of gravel. In 1953 I bought a cat [Catapiller Tractor] for them
to use.

In 1951 we moved winters into Halbrite. We bought a little house just in
front of the Catholic church from George Berry. I continued grain farming
with the boys and was councillor two years and then reeve for nine years for
the R.M. of Cymri. I also served as Mayor in Halbrite in the later years.

I was a member of the Monson School board for years. I was a member of the
board of directors of the South Halbrite Rural Telephone Company for years
and was lineman. Later years my son, Ivan took over these duties. I helped
build many roads with team and scraper. We boarded several teachers and
gravel gangs.

Note added by family:

Our dad remained active and still played whist as
a favorite pastime until 1970 when his health failed
and he became hospitalized. Dad passed away in
1973 nearly ninety-one years old; Mother, in 1977 at
age eighty-three. They are buried in Halbrite Cemetery.

Lorence was born on Cal Comstock's homestead [SE quarter Section 19,
Township 5, Range 12, West 2nd Meridian]. He attended Monson School. Like
many country children at that time, he received all his education in a
one-room country school. While growing up he enjoyed playing ball (was a
really good softball pitcher), skating, and swimming.

Hazel Pearson was born on December 22, 1914 at Froude, Sask. She was the
youngest of twelve children. She attended Hudmore School, Weyburn
Collegiate, and Regina Normal school. She started her teaching career at
Canuck, Sask. in 1931.

In 1935 Hazel came to Sunnyside School to teach. It was here she met
Lorence. They were married December 17, 1938 at Plentywood, Montana.

She continued her teaching career at Waite, Crow Lake, Hillier, and
Haibrite. She was principal at Haibrite for a time.

Lorence was employed as an oil agent at Benson for several years. He
returned to Haibrite where he was engaged in trucking. He worked for the
Municipality and farmed.

He suffered a severe heart attack in 1957, but, after a time continued
working until his death May 2, 1966.

After his death Hazel taught for awhile at Halbrite then attended university
in Saskatoon [Saskatchewan] for a year. She returned to Halbrite to teach.
In 1974 she ended her teaching career to take up library duties for the
Weyburn School Unit. She retired in 1979. After a brief illness Hazel passed
away Dec.26, 1981.

Linda Louise, born February 11, 1945 at "Grandma" Smiths (Mrs. Charles
Smith) in Halbrite. She received her education at Benson and Halbrite. She
worked for a time in Calgary [Alberta], then Weyburn [Saskatchewan]. She
married Kenneth Latham and they have two children:  Lorence Trent, who was
born April 11, 1969; and Shyla Dawn, born Nov. 4, 1974.

The Lathams now reside in Weyburn.

Sylvia married Gordon Barr. (See Barr).

Ivan (by Eileen Horsman). Ivan Lester was born on the home farm south of
Halbrite. He then went to Monson, Waite and Sunnyside Schools. At an early
age he stated farming with his dad. Since they lived only a few yards from
the river, Ivan has fond memories of cleaning off the snow from the river
and neighboring children coming and skating and sliding down the river hills
on homemade sleds and skis. Sometimes Frank Ziehl would play the fiddle
beside the ice and everyone would skate.

On July 26, 1946, Ivan and I, the former Eileen Mae Orsted, were married at
Plentywood, Montana. We lived for eight years on the former homestead of
Nick Wilgenbusch NW 16-5-12. There are three boys: Richard, Murray and
Rodney. Ivan and his brother, Lorence, loaded gravel for a number of years
along with farming with their dad.

Since we had no [electrical] power or television, our early entertainment
was Canasta or Blackout with neighbors. We loaded our families in our
sleighs and no matter the weather we went or they came over.

In 1958 due to the children starting school we chose to purchase a quarter
of prairie land NW 4-6-12 only three and one-half miles south of Haibrite
where we still live. There we moved the house and barn from the Buffin
place.

In 1965 we planted our shelterbelt [trees] which is now full grown.

After the passing of Ivan's father in 1973, Ivan and son, Murray, bought the
rest of the family farm and now ranch together.

Ivan has been a councillor for R.M. of Cymri for fifteen years.

Richard Ivan was born Aug.12, 1948. On July 19, 1969 he married June Deren
of Bienfait. His first work was for Sask. Power in Regina. Later he was
bookkeeper for Dyer's Garage in Estevan for a number of years, then worked
for Co-op fuel. He now has his own furniture business and lives in Estevan.

Frances Murray was born April 25, 1951. He lives at home and does shop work.
He also ranches and farms with his dad.

Rodney Dale, born May 23, 1955, married Rhonda Dumert of Weyburn on July 24,
1976. He is a Weyburn City Police constable. He and his wife also own and
operate a city taxi service.

Connie Jeanne was born April 7, 1960. She
married Jerry Van Roon of Weyburn July 26, 1980.
They have two children: Cary Ivan and Jennifer
Lynn. Our children went to Halbrite, Midale and
Rod and Connie to Weyburn Comp.

Our sister-in-law, Hazel Horsman, taught Ivan, I, and all our children, each
in turn: Ivan at Waite School, I, at Crow Lake, and the children at
Halbrite.

9565. Ellis V. Comstock died in Halbrite, Saskatchewan, Canada.(9408) He was
buried in Halbrite, Saskatchewan, Canada. (9408) He served in the military
in Civil War. (9408) He resided in Fergus Falls, Otter Tail Co., MN. (3029)
He resided in Halbrite, Saskatchewan, Canada. (9408)

He was married to Francis Hudson (daughter of Rev. J. C. Hudson) in
1865.(9409) Ellis V. Comstock and Francis Hudson had the following children:
