I have made a website for the parishes Valtorp and S Kyrketorp in Falköping.
It is in english as well
http://www.valtorp.se/eng/eng.htm. There is some genealogy too.

There is a new Emigrant CD, called Emibas. The Swedish Genealogical Tour http://www.dis.se/swedgentour/
had it with them and was sold out. I worked some with it and it came out in the end of August.
I have bought it, and it's a much better product then the old Emigranten.
You find info how to buy at

Hi,  Just want to tell you that I have made a special website for emigrants from
Falköping area. It also include names of emigrants. Sorted by the parish
they were born in. There you also find some info about the area.

 Västerbotten county

I saw on your home page your request being a volunteer for researching
family genealogy. I would be very glad if I can be of any help by
being a volunteer for the Västerbotten county in Sweden, containing
the parishes of Vilhelmina, Dorotea, Åsele, Lycksele, Storuman,
Sorsele, Malå, Vindeln, Bjurholm, Vännäs, Nordmaling, Umeå,
Robertsfors, Norsjö and Skellefteå. In Västerbotten county lives about
255 000 people, today.
I've been a family genealogist for over 25 years and I'm well
aquaintened with all kind of church records, other kind of records
such as the court records, records of parishes (similair to the city
hall records), archives, museums etc etc.
I'm president of a local genealogist society, Lappmarkens släkt- och
bygdeforskare, serving the area Vilhelmina, Åsele and Dorotea in
Västerbotten county and the landscape South Lapland. I am also a
member of the boarder of Västerbottens läns hembygdsförbund, which is
"the mother" of the Västerbottens museum.
I've been researching my own family for a long time and among them
those who emigrated to the US or Canada. As I'm president of the
genealogical society I've been helping members finding their own
relatives in America, and as well helped Swedish descendants finding
their roots and living relatives here in Västerbottens county in
Sweden. I've also been visiting America. And during my visits and the
research I've been so helped by people in the US or Canada that I
would like to give back some of all willingness I got. "What goes
around comes around", they say. So, I would very much like to be of
help if I can in my area.

Älvsborg

Hi Jerry,

I own all the fiche for Frändefors parish in Älvsborg. (There is a gap in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Perhaps some church books were lost or destroyed, or the parish had poor record keepers at that time.)

The fiche include:

1. husförhörslängd for 1778-1781; 1798-1900

2. births, marriages, and deaths for 1751-1781; 1803-1860

3. moving in and moving out records for 1821-1895

4. extracts from the birth, marriage, and death records for 1860-1920

5. extracts from the församlingbok for 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930

I usually can't reply immediately since I need to go to a local university to use their fiche reader/printers, so if I am busy, help would have to wait a while, but I like checking these fiche and would be willing to be on your list of volunteers. (I recently found a third cousin when he asked me to check for some of his relatives.)

I have done extensive research on both sides of my family in Sweden.  They are primarily from the Västergötland and Kalmar regions. I have a subscription to Genline and would be happy to do look ups for other people.

Harold (Hal) Bern,  Longview, WA             Halby5443@aol.com

"I work a lot with Grundsunda parish of Västernorrland, Nordmaling and Bjurholm of Västerbotten. Furthermore, Kristianstad county (today Skåne county) and Blekinge county.

I subscribe to SVAR and Genline, both suppliers of Church Records online. CD:s:  Swedish Death Index, Buried in Sweden, Emigranten, EMIBAS. I am willing to do lookups but also more extensive research. More than 10 years experience.
I am member of the local genealogical society "Södra Västerbottens släktforskare" , the society DIS with the data base DISBYT, Lunds Släktforskare and Kronobergs Genealogiska Förening.

I can help people in San Joaquin County, California (I don't charge, except if they need an official copy of a death/birth/marriage record). I live in Lodi, CA (has a fair amount of Swedish descendants) & go into the county seat of Stockton, CA often for research.   If the ancestor is buried in Stockton or Lodi, and there is a gravestone, I will photograph and email the photos at no charge, also same for obituaries from old newspapers.

Thanks, Marge          margecam@pacbell.net

I just thought you may want to add that I have most records for VÄDDÖ parish in Stockholm county.
I'll be happy to make look ups.

Hjärtliga hälsnigar,     Erik Zennstrom          erik@themediaweb.com

From Luke Walbert  Saint Paul, Minnesota
I traveled to Sweden for the first time last October and visited Småland,
Öland, Örebro/Närke and Värmland, which are where my mother's grandparents
emigrated from. I ended up doing more research than I anticipated as I came
across info on archive offices.

COMMENTS - EMIGRANT INSTITUTE - VÄXJÖ

My first stop was in Växjö (after X2000 ride from Stockholm), where I
visited the Emigrant Institute. But they had only limited information to
help with tracing my Småland g-grandmother and Öland g-grandfather. I had
limited data (limited or no birth date info) to start with but they were
able to give me a listing of six Småland women with my g-grandmother's name
within the appropriate birth and emigration date ranges. I paid for four
horus of parking at the parking ramp across the street, so after my research
took only abou 45 minutes, I spent the extra time looking at their exhibits,
having a bite of lunch, visiting the Smålands Museum next door, and
shopping.

SUGGESTION - CITY ARCHIVE OFFICE - ÖREBRO

The second place I stayed was in Örebro. At the tourist bureau (which is
located inside Örebro Castle - tourists with tired legs want to know these
things), I found a flyer on emigration and ancestry research at Örebro's
City Archives office. They have parish register microfiche for Örebro county
and city as well as some computers for emigrant research.

I don't know if you wish to add any more info on your Sweden archive office
page, but since Örebro / Närke is not represented there, here's the info for
the Örebro office:

Street address: Fanjunkarevägen 71A, Kaser Lund, Grenadjärstaden.
Postal address: Box 300 40, 701 35 Örebro
E-mail: stadsarkivet@orebro.se
Phone: 019-21 10 75
Fax: 019-21 10 50
Homepage: www.orebro.se/stadsarkiv (Swedish only)

In Örebro, I was able to find the detailed Lantmäteriet topographical maps
only at the Academie Bokhandel store, which is in a shopping center at the
south end of the Centrum. The other two bookstores in the Centrum area did
not carry those maps. The clerk at the first store told me about the other
two. Just more info to help prevent those tired legs.

I found the maps helpful in identifying the specific villages or settlements
where my ancestors were listed in the parish archives. I used the info from
the archives and the maps to plan a bus and walking tour of those locations
on one of my Örebro days. Not much to see, but nice to have that sense of
"This is the road he walked down as he started his trip to America."

COMMENTS - VÄRMLAND ARCHIVES OFFICE - KARLSTAD

My last stop before returning to Stockholm for my flight back was in Arvika,
Värmland. The attendant at the tourist bureau referred me to what ended up
being the local Arkon census data entry project. They had entered only the
censuses after my Arvika g-grandmother left (1878), but were able to give me
the Värmland Archives address in Karlstad.

I stopped there for a few hours on my way back to Stockholm. Just like in
Örebro, I was able to find out a lot more than I expected and saw that one
could easily spend days tracing ancestry lines and ancestors' siblings'
lines in the household and birth registers. Next trip, maybe. Tired leg
info: taxi from Karlstad train station to archive office would definitely be
worth it. :-)

I hope this information is helpful. Thanks for listening.   Luke Walbert  Saint Paul, Minnesota    lukewalbert@mac.com

Naming Traditions Can Help Identify Family Lines

Child were often given the names of grandparents, parents, uncles and aunts.
Knowing this can help identify potential parental lines. A first son, for example,
might be named after his father's father; the first daughter after her mother's
mother; the second son after his mother's father and so on. Subsequent children
would probably bear the names uncles and aunts as follows:

1st son = father's father
2nd son = mother's father
3rd son = father
4th son = father's oldest brother
5th son = father's
2nd oldest brother or mother's oldest brother
1st dau = mother's mother
2nd dau = father's mother
3rd dau = mother
4th dau = mother's oldest sister
5th dau = mother's 2nd oldest sister or father's oldest sister

Inheritance factors (such as a rich uncle) could break the pattern. In addition it
is not uncommon to find more than one child of a couple with the same given names.
This normally occurred when the one of the children died and a subsequent child
was given the same name. In the 19th Century in the United States, boys were often
given first names like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson or Benjamin Franklin in
honor of the Founding Fathers.
